Lauren James – a Liverpudlian in the wilds of Bavaria …

Nach mehrjähriger Pause wurde den beiden Burghauser Gymnasien vom Bayerischen Ministerium für Unterricht und Kultus zum Schuljahr 2023/24 wieder eine englischsprachige Fremdsprachenassistentin zugewiesen, die zu gleichen Teilen an beiden Schulen für Konversationsübungen eingesetzt wurde: Lauren James, Studentin der Geschichte und der Germanistik an der nordenglischen University of Durham und aus Liverpool stammend, wurde – selbst kaum älter als unsere „alten“ Schüler! – rasch zum Lichtblick im ansonsten manchmal grauen englischen Unterrichtsalltag. Schüler wie Englischkollegen waren sämtlich der Meinung, dass hier ein echtes Lehrertalent schlummert! Die – zumindest aus britischer Sicht – eigentümliche bayerische Aussprache und Intonation irritierten Lauren schon bald nicht mehr, wie im Gegenzug auch Schüler und Kollegen Laurens wunderbar authentischen Liverpudlian accent schätzen lernten. Bereits zum 31.05.2024 endete Laurens Arbeitsvertrag – wir haben sie nur ungern gehen lassen …

I would like the school to read this:

My time at Aventinus Gymnasium has been one that will forever stay with me. I remember so vividly my first time at the school. I was painfully aware of how young I was, how inexperienced at teaching, the difficulty of the local dialect, how inept my German was, and, overall, how nervous I was that the teachers and students wouldn’t welcome me. I’ve never before been so pleasantly surprised! The staff and students at Aventinus have made me feel so welcome and cherished over the past nine months that it is painful for me to leave. Each week I looked forward to all of my classes, from the 5th to the 12th grades. Each one was so welcoming to me and never failed to surprise me with curious questions and amusement. I hope that Aventinus knows how lucky it is to have such warm, kind staff and such curious, intelligent and welcoming pupils. Not once did I feel out of place during my time here, on the contrary, I felt so included and part of the school’s life that there will now always be a part of Aventinus in England. Thank you to everyone for making my stay in Germany so memorable!
