USA Update 2023: A House Divided

On Friday, February 3, Dr Markus Hünemörder, guidance counsellor and adjunct lecturer at the chair for American studies at LMU Munich, visited our school to give a talk about the current political situation in the US. The entire 11th and 12th grades of both Aventinus-Gymnasium and Kurfürst-Maximilian-Gymnasium had the chance to deepen their knowledge about much of what had already been dealt with in their regular English classes. Not only did Dr Hünemörder talk about the former and current presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden and their respective successes (a little less so in terms of Donald Trump …) and failures, he also discussed topics such as abortion laws, the religious right, inflation and the political/cultural divide of both Congress and society at large. In order to maintain the attention of the student audience (not an easy task, we are aware …) he provided cartoons and short clips taken from the Simpsons, thus adding a lively note to his presentation. At the end students could ask questions which Dr Hünemörder did not fail to answer (but then, needless to say, not many people did dare ask …).

USA update – mit den Simpsons die aktuelle Lage der USA erkundet

Vortrag von Dr. Markus Hünemörder von der LMU München am AVG

Einen tiefen und kompakten Einblick in die gegenwärtige politische Lage in den USA erhielten die Schülerinnen und Schüler der Q 11 und Q 12 des Aventinus-Gymnasiums Burghausen in einem Vortrag des in der Welt der Amerikanistik sehr bekannten LMU-Dozenten Dr. Markus Hünemörder geboten. Zusammen mit den Oberstufenschülern des AVG kamen auch jene des KuMax zu Besuch, sodass eine große Schülerschar den Ausführungen von Herrn Hünemörder lauschte.

Dabei wurden sie nicht enttäuscht. Sowohl die sehr profunde, kompakte politische Analyse, immer wieder angereichert durch kleine Video -Clips, bei denen die Simpsons natürlich nicht fehlen durften, als auch der mitreißende Vortrag selbst trugen dazu bei, dass die Schülerinnen und Schüler dem Vortrag aufmerksam folgten. Organisiert wurde die Veranstaltung durch den Fachschaftsleiter Englisch am Aventinus-Gymnasium, StD Werner Thalmeir – eine Veranstaltung, die sicherlich auch als sehr gewinnbringend für die bevorstehenden Abiturprüfungen der Q 12 gewertet werden darf.
